What is a UK ETA status check?
A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is digital permission to travel to the UK for eligible visitors. It is linked to the passport used for the application and does not guarantee entry at the border.
UKVI normally communicates its decision by email. Before travelling, make sure you have received confirmation and use the same passport.
How to check your UK ETA status
There is no public live UK ETA application tracker. Use the decision email for a recent application and the official checker only for an ETA already granted.
- Check the inbox used in the application for the UKVI decision email and 16-digit ETA reference.
- Check Spam, Junk and other filtered folders. Decisions for different people can arrive at different times.
- For an ETA already granted, use the official GOV.UK checker with the passport used to apply.
- The official checker cannot track a pending application; wait for the decision email.
- If no decision arrives after three working days, contact UKVI using its ETA webchat or contact form.
The GOV.UK checker is for an ETA that has already been granted. You need the passport used in the application. It does not show live progress for a pending application.
How long does UK ETA processing take?
GOV.UK says you will usually receive a decision by email within one day, although it can take up to three working days.
Do not travel until you receive an email confirming that you have an ETA. Apply before your planned journey.
Understanding your UK ETA application status
These descriptions explain common stages in plain language. They are not official live tracking labels.
Application submitted
Your application has been sent. Keep the confirmation details and monitor your email.
Awaiting a decision
UKVI has not yet sent a decision. There is no public live view of internal checks.
ETA approved
The email confirms an ETA has been granted and linked to the passport used.
ETA refused
Review the decision email before deciding whether a visa or new application is appropriate.
Why is my UK ETA taking longer than expected?
Identity, passport information, photographs or other details may need additional review. A delay does not predict the decision.
Check the email address used, search spam and junk folders, and contact UKVI if no decision arrives after three working days.
What happens after your UK ETA is approved?
An approved ETA is linked electronically to the passport used to apply. You must travel using that passport.
It normally lasts two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever is sooner, and permits multiple eligible journeys.
What if your UK ETA is refused?
Read the decision email carefully. If an application is rejected or details need changing, GOV.UK says a new application is required. Approval is not guaranteed.
Depending on your circumstances, the correct next step may be an appropriate UK visa rather than another ETA application.
Do you need a new UK ETA?
You may need a new ETA when the previous ETA or linked passport has expired, the passport was replaced, or you do not yet have an ETA.
- Your existing ETA has expired.
- Your linked passport expired, changed or was replaced.
- You do not yet have an ETA and need one for eligible travel.
